This tutorial will walk you through setting up e-mail
message rules. One of the best features of Microsoft
Outlook is this feature. It allows you complete control
over where incoming mail goes, and whether it comes in
at all. Getting a bunch of junk e-mail that you could
easily do without? Do you get special newsletters or
e-mails from your family and wish you could separate
them from the rest of your e-mail? You can do all of
this, and more, with e-mail message rules.
Firstly, you must open Outlook Express. First, look on
your desktop for an icon labeled Outlook Express. If you
can't find it there, check in the Start Menu under
Programs. Open my computer and browse to the following
folder and file
C:/Program Files/Outlook Express/msimn.exe
When you open the program, you may find some popup
message boxes and wizards that popup. Close all of
them.
Click on Tools >> Message Rules >>> Mail...
Click on the button labeled New...
Step one is selecting a condition. The condition is
whatever you want Outlook to look at when e-mail comes
in.
The way this works is the following. When an e-mail
comes in, Outlook scans the part of the e-mail specified
by the condition you set. Based upon that result, it
deals with the e-mail through the action you assign the
message rule.
What Outlook will do is scan the sender address (if you
specify the sender address in the condition). If the
sender is the same as the one you specify, Outlook can
delete it for you.
Determine what you want this message rule to do, and
select the corresponding check boxes on the current
window.
In step three of this window, you must finally specify
the actual words, numbers, addresses, and/or names that
you will be using in this rule. Click on the blue
underlined text and enter in your information.
If you wish, you can name this rule. Naming it isn't
necessary, but is a good idea.
When you are completed, Click OK
From now on, the rule will apply - meaning any e-mail
still in your inbox that may be affected by the new
message rule you just made will not be affected until
you click the Apply Now button.
You can make as many rules as you like.
