What is wireless internet?

Wireless internet is a broadcast signal (radio) in the 2.4Ghz to 5.4Ghz range.

How does it work?

The system is very similar to how a radio works. There is a tower that is broadcasting the signal. This signal is then picked up by an antenna and transferred to a device- typically a computer.

Is this satellite internet?

It is called fixed wireless... What most of these companies offering high-speed satellite internet access don't make clear to you is that the communication is not full duplex. Most people think that the signal goes from the satellite to your home, and from your home directly to the satellite. This is not true because in order to do this, you would have to have a fairly expensive transmitter outside your house to transmit the signal to the satellite. Here is what really happens: A 'request' happens when you click on a link to a site. This request travels to various routers throughout the U.S. and sometimes throughout the world to get to the site you wanted to visit. Through the satellite internet setup, this request still travels along your slow phone line connections. When the site is reached, you then get high speed download speeds from the satellite.
Our setup allows for full duplex transmission - you will be able to send AND receive data at high speeds.

How fast is it?

The wireless network operates at 11MB per second. Typical connection speeds range from 348KB to 768KB per second. To put this into perspective: Your typical dial-up modem connects around 48KB per second. In comparing the two speeds, you can see that wireless is between 7 and 16 times faster than dial-up!

Do I need to dial a number when I want to get on the internet?

No. You will never need to dial a number again. This service is always ready when you are. No dialing. No waiting to connect. No tying up the phone lines or getting kicked off. Just an always-available high-speed connection.

What will I need to connect to your system?

This answer varies with each client. If you want to connect only one computer to this system, what you need is only a network card in your computer. A firewall is recommended.

If you are a business or multi-user client you will need one firewall. You will also need a network card in each of the computers connecting to the wireless internet service.

You may also choose to go wireless in your home/business place. This setup is the simplest and most flexible. In this type on installation, the internet signal is brought into a central location located in your home/business place. From there, we install a Wireless Access Point/Firewall. At this point, we install minimal hardware in all of the devices connected to the wireless internet.

What all of this means is you have your own personal private wireless network. Since the device we are installing as an access point is also a firewall, you can secure your network so that someone driving down the street with a laptop and a wireless card cannot access your internet and use your bandwidth. Also, if you ever get more computers, is is a very simple task to connect them to the internet service. If you ever get a laptop, you can get a wireless card and surf the net, high speed, anywhere in your house/place of business.

We will chose the best hardware configuration given your location and connection speed and confirm our decision with you. If necessary, we will install an amplifier. To see an extended parts list, please visit our pricing page.

I am interested in your service, but my location is surrounded by trees. Can I still get your signal?

Trees do pose problems. However, pending on your location and elevation, you can still have high speed internet.

Is it available now?

Yes. We have several access points in the area of Amherst , Custer, Iola and Nelsonville. The Amherst water tower is are main access point in the downtown Amherst area. A 100' tower in Nelsonville is the main distribution center. All internet requests go through it. Our newest access point is located on The Midwest Renewable Energy Tower near Custer.

We are constantly updating our plans for new access points. If we are not in your area yet, chances are we will be there soon!

How far does your signal go?

This technology is very similar to standard radio technology. Thus, this signal can be transmitted across great distances (many miles) and still retain its quality and speed. However, unlike radio technology, this is based upon line of site. Which means the signal does not go through walls or other obstacles very easily. We must have a fairly clean line of site to allow for high speed, reliable internet access.

I am already a customer of your dial-up service. Am I required to switch to wireless?

No. We will still provide 56K Dial-Up internet access in addition to wireless internet access. If you wish to set up a dial-up account or have any questions, please call
824-2515 between 9-5 central time.

Can I read your Terms and Conditions and Customer Agreement online?

Yes. Terms and Conditions. Customer Agreement.

Can your internet signal be 'hacked' into?

No. Many levels of security block unauthorized access to our system, as well as any other users on the system.

How much does it cost?

Please visit our pricing page for details.
